Crunch time

September 13, 2009 1 comment

So my precious first batch of Year 11′s had their first Level 1 English exam last week.  They were nervous [and I was too] but I have had a quick look at some of the exams and I am pleased with how some of the grrls went.

I am full of ideas for revision for Term 4 as well as units of teaching for next year.  I plan on trying to stick to a Unit plan much more closely – and build into my units ‘pathways’ that take into account student progression etc.

Metacognitive Learning…what I dont know!gs

So it is 12.21am and I am creating an exam cramming guide for my Year 11′s.  I am a little worried about them.  I’m not sure that I have ‘managed’ them well.  I think I have let them get away on me and they sorta run the show.  I am spending more and more time trying to get the behaviour under control.  I know I’m not the only teacher in the school with this problem, and I know that it is acknowledged by other teachers that I have a high percentage of ‘trouble makers’ and ‘misfits’ in my class – especially considering I am a first year teacher.  But I still feel like a bit of a failure.  It’s time to nip this feeling in the bud.

Anway, I have created a guide for the students to used over the next couple of days.  The key – I remember this from my own study days – is to symplify things.  Explain even quite complicated concepts to people in accessible language and without the hype, and they might just take the bait.

I hope anyway.

Had a good Essay writing session with Year 9s today.  I have a slight hint of bullying by exclusion with JA.  Not quite sure how to handle it.  Should talk to Cathryn (in her capacity as SCT) and Carter about what to do.
